Fear Street: Prom Queen (Friday, Netflix)

Netflix's big three-week Fear Street event in 2021 is fondly remembered as one of the streamer's best event series and the trilogy itself is now a beloved staple in the world of slasher movies. After almost four years of waiting, we finally get to watch the next entry in the series this Friday with Fear Street: Prom Queen, based on R.L. Stine's Fear Street book of the same name.

The promo leading up to this movie has been exciting, with plenty of throwback references to 1970s and 1980s movies like Carrie and Prom Night. Shadyside is the target of a terrifying killer once more as a masked murderer begins attacking the high school candidates for prom queen in the year 1988. The lead-up to the biggest social event of the year should be a time for fun and friendly competition, but things take a much darker and bloodier turn this time around.

The Surrender (Friday, Shudder)

Julia Max makes her feature directorial debut in this chilling occult horror movie that feels like it would make the perfect double feature with upcoming A24 film Bring Her Back. Both movies are about grieving characters participating in dangerous rituals to bring someone back to life.

In The Surrender, the story centers on a mother and daughter who find their already challenging relationship tested even more when the family patriarch dies suddenly. The mother, played by Grey's Anatomy alum Kate Burton, hires a mysterious person to try bringing him back to life, and as anyone who watches horror movies knows, that's basically always a recipe for disaster. Colby Minifie (The Boys) also stars.

The Surrender has been receiving great buzz from critics who praise the film for its body horror and sympathetic portrayal of caretakers.

Mickey 17 (Friday, Max)

If you didn't get the chance to see Bong Joon Ho's latest movie Mickey 17 in theaters, you'll soon be able to watch it at home. While not a horror movie, Mickey 17 is an excellent sci-fi black comedy film with some horror elements. The story revolves around a colonization effort on the ice planet of Nilfheim.

Robert Pattison plays Mickey Barnes, a guy who gets caught up with a dangerous loan shark and desperately seeks a way to escape. When he learns about an opportunity to travel to Nilfheim for work, he seizes the opportunity and signs up to be an "Expendable," which is a dangerous job that involves being repeatedly cloned so he can take on all of the dangerous work and die, then later brought back to life, hence the "expendable" nature of the work.

Mickey 17 received a lot praise for its smart writing and the incredible performances at the center of the film, particularly Pattinson who plays multiple clones of Mickey.

The following are previous May releases.

Final Destination Bloodlines (Theaters)

Almost 15 years after the fifth Final Destination hit theaters, we're finally getting a new one. By this point in the franchise, most viewers know what they're getting when they start watching a Final Destination movie. This one will keep true to the formula, albeit with connections to previous films and characters.

Based on the trailer, the film will delve into the beginnings of Death's vendetta, all based on one woman, Iris (Brec Bassinger), successfully diverting disaster after experiencing a premonition of a horrific tower collapse. The main story revolves around Iris's granddaughter, Stefani (Gabrielle Rose), experiencing something similar to Iris and turning to her for help and assistance in saving their family.

Love, Death + Robots season 4 (Netflix)

Netflix's bold and entertaining anthology series returns this week with a delightful mix of horror, sci-fi, and fantasy stories within its latest collection. Featuring 10 original sorts, Love, Death + Robots volume 4 includes dinosaur gladiators, personified appliances, and so much more.

Presented by Tim Miller (Deadpool) and David Fincher, there is plenty to look forward to in these creative bite-sized installments. Each episode is produced by a different team, allowing for a wide range of artistic storytelling.

Hurry Up Tomorrow (Theaters)

It Comes at Night director Trey Edward Schults brings us his latest movie, a collaborative effort with musical artist Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye. Described as a musical psychological thriller, Hurry Up Tomorrow is a companion to The Weeknd's recently released abulm of the same name, which came out in January of this year.

The Grammy Award-winning musical artist plays a fictionalized version of himself in the film. He meets a mysterious stranger (Jenna Ortega) who pulls him into a "nightmarish odyssey." Barry Keoghan also stars.

Murderbot (Apple TV+)

This science fiction comedy series is based on the books by Martha Wells. Alexander Skarsgård plays the lead character, a security robot that develops the ability to think for itself and shows an inclination toward soap opera.

Murderbot would prefer to spend its time watching shows rather than dealing with dangerous work, but is also intrigued by the humans who employ these security cyborgs to assist. Apple TV+ will begin streaming the first two episodes on Friday, May 16, with new episodes releasing weekly until the July 11 finale.
